Our study group in Managerial Accounting had a meeting on campus tonight. There were four of us in the meeting in person, and one group member joined us for the part of the meeting over the phone, as he was out of town on business. In this group there were modest aspirations in terms of the meeting location. We gathered in one of the study rooms in the university’s library, not in the students’ bar lounge, like my Global Perspectives group. Nevertheless it took us over an hour and a half before broke out from the meeting with half-baked solution to the case on John Deere cost allocation based on the Activity Based Costing (ABC) and comparing it to the Standard Costing System.
I was handicapped in the meeting discussion by the fact that I had not read the corresponding chapter in the textbook, though I had read the case itself in advance. Now that I have read some of the material in the textbook after the meeting, it seems as if some of my groupmates have not read or have not understood the textbook either. Anyways, now I think that I am getting the idea about possible approaches. Or may be I am overthinking it again
, and the solution we have come up with is quite adequate. Let’s wait and see what kind of epiphany I will have after finishing the whole chapter at 3 in the morning
By the way, the two students in our group who are in Accounting Masters’ program are struggling with the subject just as much as the three of us in MBA program. Turned out their undergraduate degrees were not in Accounting, as I assumed. One of them was in business, the other-marketing. So we all have kind of level field and almost the same learning curve in this course.

If you feel the need to dig more into cost accounting, this is by far the best book around (at least in my part of the woods)

Cheers!
Thanks for a pointer. As a matter of fact the textbook we are using in the course seems to be very adequate for the task. If only I had enough time to read it thoroughly
PTMBAer-
i have learnt quite a bit from your blog. Is it possible to reach you via email? My questions will more towards the FT prog and GWU ambiance as a whole.
On a side note, i think this blog deserves to be linked on the GWU website.
Keep up the good work! Cheers!
