The snow storms battering the Washington, DC area in February are not really even news anymore. It has become sort of boring routine. I don’t even need to put up pictures of the snowfall, as it is just more of the same old. Nothing newsworthy.
Anyways, today started the next round of snowfalls in the area. Seems like most people even got used to it and don’t succumb to psychotic shopping on the scale before the first storm of the month on February 6-7, 2010.
Today I had to get out from the house. As I was close to a supermarket Bloom I decided to stop by to get some appetizers. It was about noon, and the snowfall was expected to start around 3-4 PM. The store was in quite orderly shape. Milk, meat and produce were all well-stocked. There were quite a few people in the store, but I did not see any shopping carts piled with stuff up to the ceiling as was the case on Friday morning, February 5 at Giant. It resembled much more a regular shopping day.
When I got to the cashier with just two appetizers’ boxes, she asked me if it was all for me for today. I confirmed. Then there was another customer behind me with just a couple of items. The cashier mentioned something about people being crazy buying all the stuff in excessive manner. She also mentioned that there were some customers who brought to return some stuff they had bought before the first storm of February. As they said they had bought too much of it.
For me it was an interesting twist confirming my conviction about the irrational nature of this pre-storm buying craziness. Many people are not being simply prudent in their preparation for a snowstorm, they are just smitten by the irrational fear. Enough of that.
A positive side effect of the snowstorm for me was that the office was closed and I had extra time to enjoy between being with the family and doing my homework assignments for MBA classes. Wednesday again is announced as closed day for work, and classes at George Washington University are cancelled. There goes my class on Global Perspectives for this week. It is possible that Managerial Accounting class on Thursday will be cancelled too. Still need to do my homework.
